The paper, how to hang it and how to look after it

Every Hantelix roll is the same paper and the same size. Only the pattern, and therefore the repeat, changes.

The paper

  • Non-woven base: a blend of wood pulp and synthetic fibres that does not expand when wet, so drops do not shrink back and open the seams.
  • Printed with water-based pigment inks, matt finish. No vinyl layer, no metallic inks.
  • Roll 52 cm × 10 m (20.5 in × 32.8 ft), about 5.2 m² (56 sq ft) before pattern matching.
  • Paste the wall. Strips off dry.
  • Wipeable, not scrubbable.

Drop length is the wall height plus 10 cm for trimming, rounded up to a whole repeat, plus half a repeat for a half-drop. The roll calculator does this for you.

Preparing the wall

The wall should be clean, dry, smooth and sound. Fill cracks and sand them flat: the grid of Mosaic and the lines of Grille show every bump. Seal new plaster and bare board with a primer. For Terrazzo, Slate and Scaffold, Night, hang over lining paper or paint a stripe of a similar dark colour where each seam will fall, so a hairline gap does not show white.

Hanging

  1. Unroll every roll and check it before you cut. We replace print faults, but not once a roll is on the wall.
  2. Mark a plumb line one roll-width, less 1 cm, from your starting corner.
  3. Roll paste onto one drop's width of wall, a little wider than the paper.
  4. Hang the first drop to the plumb line, leaving 5 cm spare top and bottom. Smooth from the centre outwards.
  5. Butt each next drop to the last, matching the pattern. Do not overlap.
  6. Trim top and bottom against a spatula with a fresh blade. Wipe paste off the face straight away with a damp sponge.

Cleaning

Wipe marks with a damp, well-wrung cloth and a drop of mild soap, then pat dry. Do not scrub, do not use solvents, and do not use a magic-eraser sponge, which takes the ink off with the mark. Keep the paper out of splash zones behind sinks, basins and hobs, and out of shower rooms.

Sunlight

Pigment inks hold their colour well, but no printed paper is immune to years of direct sun. A wall facing a south window will fade faster than one that does not.

Removing it

Lift a bottom corner with a knife and peel each drop upwards, dry. On a primed wall it comes away whole. Wash off any paste residue with warm water before painting.
